However, two former United managers considered an approach for the prolific Pole. United finalising Fred transfer Ferguson watched Lewandowski in person at the German cup final when he scored a hat-trick in Borussia Dortmund’s rout of Bayern. Former Arsenal, Manchester United and Netherlands forward Robin van Persie says he will retire from football at the end of the season. The year-old – who returned to Feyenoord, where he made.
Follow It is just two years since Robin van Persie strolled through a guard of honour at the Emirates Stadium, begrudgingly applauded onto the pitch by his former Arsenal team-mates having inspired Manchester United to the Premier League title. The Dutch forward had hit the jackpot. Yet on Sunday, when Van Persie faces his former club again, there will be no guard of honour and, quite possibly, not even a place in the team even with Wayne Rooney absent.
From that moment in , Van Persie has developed into an enigma who cannot even convince an apparent kindred spirit in Louis van Gaal of his worth to United. There have been suggestions of a rift between Louis van Gaal and Robin van Persie Van Persie has told friends he is happy in Manchester, where his children are settled in school in the area, and has no desire to pursue a move away from the club this summer.
But with a year remaining on his contract, he is facing a new reality at United and may only survive to see out that contract by default, with Radamel Falcao failing to earn a permanent move following a loan from Monaco and the cost of keeping Van Persie likely to prove more prudent than replacing him. Turkish football has become a well-remunerated destination for fading superstars – Wesley Sneijder and Didier Drogba have both benefited from huge financial rewards at Galatasaray – but the likelihood is that United will stick with Van Persie for one more year in the hope that he can rediscover the form of his first season.
The sad truth, however, is that his career appears to have peaked back in , his final year at Arsenal, when 30 goals in 38 appearances prompted his move to United. Robin van Persie’s diminishing returns Interactive: He also delivered crosses and corners. The contrast to this season is stark – Van Persie has made 26 league appearances for United, scoring 10 goals.

Eckhard Krautzun oversaw a young Klopp as he made the transition from player to coach, happily reminiscing about the times he sent the now-Reds boss on scouting trips to Africa and beyond. What he offers is exactly what we need. It’s like Harry Potter – but it about football. Since we’re here anyway, we might actually play a bit of football.

After losing the first group match against the Soviet Union 1—0 , the Netherlands qualified for the semi-final by defeating England 3—1 with a hat-trick by the tournament’s top scorer Marco van Basten , and the Republic of Ireland 1—0. For many Dutch football supporters, the most important match in the tournament was the semi-final against West Germany, the host country, considered a revenge for the lost World Cup final also in West Germany.
Van Basten scored in the 89th minute to sink the German side. This was the national team’s first major tournament win, and it restored them to the forefront of international football for the next three years after almost a decade in the wilderness. Despite high expectations as the team entered the World Cup in Italy, the tournament was not a success, as strife within the squad and managerial instability Thijs Libregts took over from Michels only to be fired shortly after the team qualified, and was replaced by Leo Beenhakker for the finals ultimately tore the team apart.
Van Basten failed to score, as he was in poor form and tightly marked by opposing defenders, while Gullit was ineffective having not fully recovered from injury. The Dutch managed to advance despite drawing all three group games, meeting their arch-rivals West Germany in the round of

Now that Vidic has played his last game for Manchester United, and with Evra looking like he has done so too, the Red Devils are in need of a new permanent captain. Fifteen trophy-filled seasons later, another raid on north London was prompted by a very different war footing: Manchester City had won the league.
When they wooed Van Persie, whose feet were growing itchy in an underachieving Arsenal team, Fergie flew into action. Fergie paid less than half of that for the man who would win him his final title. By the time Van Persie emerged from the bench, Marouane Fellaini had already scored the winner. More crucially, second-half sub Wayne Rooney suffered a gashed leg which would rule him out for a month. By the time the Scouser returned, the new boy was on five goals in three starts.

That’s not to say I don’t appreciate its beauty. When I watch the sea in somewhere like Sardinia, I see the beauty in that. It’s hard to explain in words, hard to put my finger on it. Vijievan Jeevathayalan 30 Oct The Premier League has been blessed with some of the most devastating striking tandems since its formation in Whilst traditional two-striker formations are slowly fading away among the Premier League’s elite, there have been some very prolific partnerships over the years. Below is a look at some of the very best striking duos to have dominated the Premier League. Being prolific in English football’s second tier is something, but to translate that kind of form and efficiency in front of goal against the very best is incredibly difficult.
However, Phillips and Quinn formed arguably one of the most surprisingly impressive strike partnerships in Premier League history. The old school ‘little and large’ partnership where Quinn would win headers and act as a target man with Phillips feeding off him, proved very successful for Sunderland in their return to the top flight. So much so that Phillips ended up with 30 goals to his name and in the process became the first and only Englishman to this day to have won the European Golden Boot.
Highest Combined League Goals: Shearer went on to finish as the Premier League’s top scorer for the third successive season with 25 goals and added another PFA Player of the Year award to his collection. Though the strikers were only together for one season, they were both near the peak of their powers and combined explosively to score a staggering 49 times in the league together. They were electric with the ball and devastating on the break, and with a great supporting cast behind them, both Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez affectionately known as ‘SAS’ , were lethal in front of goal.
Whilst not necessarily the most obvious of strike ‘partnerships’ due to their own individuality, the two accounted for 52 league goals that year and were the scorers of some of the most audacious Premier League goals in history. With the traditional two-man strike force at this point slowly fading out, it was refreshing to see both Sturridge and Suarez succeed in playing as two out-and-out strikers.
