This speed dating game is an excellent starter or ice breaker. I used it with my upper intermediate/advanced classes at the start of the year as a way to get them talking. It works just like regular speed dating in that students have to ‘sell’ themselves to others in two minutes.4/5(10).
To prepare, I’ve spent the last few days gathering resources and thinking about how I might frame this story when I present it to students. I teach a tenth grade World Literatures course, where students study fiction, non-fiction, and creative texts from the non-western world. What perspective do we as readers from particular backgrounds and with particular experiences bring to a text? What perspective do other readers and writers offer on this text? So in thinking about how I might bring this theme into our reading of The Kite Runner, I’m considering presenting the students the basics of literary criticism to help frame the reading of the text.
I’ve taught students literary criticism basics in the past. By teaching literary criticism as a lens, I have found it also helps students understand some related literary tropes and devices. In the past, students have completed a WebQuest activity to help introduce the various theories. The Kite Runner could prove fruitful for this type of study. However, I worry that using this type of frame might reduce the story to nothing more than its devices and context. I suppose this is the danger when teaching literary criticism in general.

How cool is it, I thought, to have grandparents that not only have a computer, but know how to use it? What was more striking was that my grandfather, a man who never had much formal technical education, built not one, but two, computers from parts—motherboard, disk drives, hard drives, and so forth—with the help of my cousin. He even built a computer for my grandmother, who uses it to check the obituaries daily on the Winston-Salem Journal Web site and does online jigsaw puzzles.

Posted on 27 February by Alexandra Lowe Learning how to paraphrase is a crucial academic writing skill. Take, for instance, the following quotation attributed to Ernest Hemingway: All you do is sit at a typewriter and bleed. And could they do it in fewer words than the original quote? Then I asked them to dictate their paraphrase to a classmate at the board. Here are some of the paraphrases we ended up with: Creating is a piece of cake.

Students are often frustrated by the amount of time they need to devote to the process and teachers are dissuaded by the correction load that a large writing class can produce. There’s also the creative aspect: I set out to do just this and, over the course of a few months, created a writing class where students attended regularly, made good progress and most important, developed into enthusiastic writers.
I strongly believe that the success of this class came from the strength of its methodology with an emphasis on grammatical structure and error correction, and the use of interesting and relevant content e. I relied heavily on news articles to get students engaged and invested in the writing topic. I developed this writing course not only to have a mass appeal among students, but I also structured it to help students improve their writing as much as possible in a relatively short period of time.

Speed-dating to review course material and build community Posted on by Kathleen Susman This semester, I came up with a cool way to have my class get to know each other a little bit on the first day. My course is an intermediate-level neuroscience course that builds on knowledge they should have gained in more introductory-level work. I wanted to highlight particular concepts that they should have mastered and to gauge how well that knowledge was retained by them.
So, I made up a question sheet, with space for answers, with one fewer answer than pairs of students. So, eight questions for nine pairs of students. The new pair introduced themselves and worked on the second question, for another two minute session. Speed-dating-style review of key concepts! Just enough time to address the question and do a quick introduction.
Now, half of the class was introduced to each other.
